The initial surveys for the integrated maritime hub slated for development in L. Gaadhoo were carried out last Wednesday by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) in collaboration with CAMC Engineering, the Chinese company contracted for the project.

CAMC Engineering secured the contract for the development of the integrated maritime hub, which encompasses a wide range of maritime services, on April 11th.

A team of seven experts from CAMC, alongside a technical delegation from MPL, participated in the inaugural survey aimed at assessing the requirements of the project.

Given Gaadhoo’s reputation as a habitat for turtle nesting and hatching, the project will adhere to environmentally friendly principles aimed at preserving the natural diversity of the area. Efforts will be made to conserve the specific locations where turtles and tortoises lay eggs and hatch. Furthermore, plans include the establishment of a rehabilitation centre to support local conservation efforts.

In line with environmental considerations, the expertise and recommendations of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be sought to inform the conceptualization of the project.

The proposed development comprises a range of facilities, including a cruise terminal and eco-resort, which are touted to be the first of their kind in the Maldives. Additionally, plans entail the creation of a superyacht marina, an offshore bunkering facility, and a transshipment harbour.

Although Gaadhoo has long been identified as an ideal location for maritime services, such initiatives have yet to be realised.

The establishment of a maritime hub in Laamu Atoll fulfils an electoral promise made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
