In a bid to establish bunkering services, a term sheet has been signed with the multinational energy and commodity trading company, Vitol Bunkers. This collaboration aims to position the Maldives as a key global bunkering destination, enhancing the country’s presence on the world bunkers map.

MPL has been instrumental in the initiation of bunkering services in the northern region. It has provided a tugboat and a pilot boat to assist vessels arriving and docking in the harbours. The captains and crews of these boats were warmly welcomed by MPL’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, along with other company officials.

Final preparations include the development of an administrative office, which MPL reports is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed by 15 August.

Bunkering, the process of supplying fuel to vessels, is in high demand due to the Maldives’ strategic location near two major shipping routes. Offering bunkering services is anticipated to significantly benefit the nation’s economy.

The project will be executed in two phases. The first phase involves providing off-port bunkering services, which will require physical infrastructure to support vessels docking in the atolls. The second phase includes the development of a port designed to offer services.
