Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that the issues affecting the transportation of goods from Colombo Port have been resolved, bringing an end to months of disruption that impacted cargo movement to the Maldives.

Earlier this year, delays in unloading cargo at Male’ Commercial Harbour led to significant congestion, leaving approximately 4,200 containers stranded at Colombo Port in Sri Lanka. The disruption was attributed to the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on regional shipping operations and schedules.

In response to the situation, the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade worked with relevant authorities to accelerate the clearance and transportation of cargo. The measures were aimed at preventing shortages in the local market and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of essential goods across the country.

According to MPL, the coordinated efforts undertaken by the authorities have successfully addressed all issues related to the shipments that had been stranded in Colombo. The company said cargo transportation between Colombo and the Maldives has now returned to normal, easing pressure on supply chains and port operations.

The resolution of the backlog is expected to support the steady flow of imports into the Maldives and help maintain the availability of goods in the domestic market.
