Speaking to PSM News, CEO Wajeeh revealed that the government has entrusted MPL with the task of spearheading the development of the commercial port in Laamu Atoll, with plans for its launch within the current year.

The chosen location for the port is Gaadhoo, Laamu Atoll, selected for its strategic positioning to cater primarily to the needs of the tourism industry. Wajeeh underscored the port’s intended services, which will include bunkering and transshipment facilities, as well as amenities like storage and cruise terminals.

The CEO disclosed that the project’s value exceeds one million dollars, with financial arrangements already finalised and contracts awarded to the relevant contractors. He anticipates that the establishment of the commercial port will lead to a significant increase in employment opportunities, with an estimated 2000 jobs expected to be created.

In addition to the Laamu Atoll project, Wajeeh provided updates on other ongoing ventures, highlighting the progress of the port development in Hithadhoo, Addu City.

He noted that while bunkering services are currently operational at the Hithadhoo port, similar services are slated to commence at the Kulhudhuffushi port, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, in the near future.
