MV+ News Desk | June 17, 2025

The Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) has introduced a national framework aimed at unifying Quranic education across the country.

The newly gazetted initiative seeks to eliminate inconsistencies in curricula and standardise academic progression among higher education institutions offering programmes in Quranic sciences.

The framework addresses long-standing challenges faced by students, who have often encountered difficulties when transferring between institutions or advancing through different levels of study. Variations in programme content and duration have led to repeated material and disrupted academic progress, particularly for students pursuing diploma and degree-level qualifications.

To tackle these issues, the MQA has enacted the Minimum Standards for Educational Programmes of the Holy Quranic Sciences. This set of national standards establishes a clearly defined curriculum that spans from Certificate Level 1 through to undergraduate programmes. It introduces consistent academic guidelines, including standardised durations of study, credit requirements for each level, and uniform eligibility criteria for enrolment.

At the core of the policy is a focus on academic mobility, enabling students to move between institutions without facing curriculum mismatches. The MQA expects the framework to foster a more structured, coherent, and equitable educational environment for students of the Holy Quran.
