The Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) has announced it will no longer recognise courses and qualifications from 101 institutions that have failed to re-register under the Higher Education and Training Act.

In a statement, the MQA clarified that higher education and training centres are required to register with the Ministry of Higher Education to operate legally. The list of non-compliant institutions was shared with MQA by the ministry, prompting the authority to revoke recognition of previously approved programmes from these entities.

“Under Article 21(b) of the Higher Education and Training Act, this Authority will not recognise programmes previously approved and conducted by 101 institutions not registered on the Ministry’s registry of Higher Education, Skills and Vocational Development,” the statement read.

While the MQA’s decision takes immediate effect, the authority assured that it will continue to recognise certificates of students who have already completed programmes and whose batch audits have been submitted to the MQA to date.

The list of 101 institutions includes a range of entities, such as diving institutes, Quran classes, the Maldives Cabin Crew Academy, Glonet, cooking courses, and other vocational training centres.

This development underscores the importance of compliance with registration requirements to maintain operational legitimacy and programme recognition within the Maldivian education and training sector.
