According to MRC, the funds raised will be directed towards providing urgent humanitarian relief through the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS). The SLRCS has mobilised its branches and more than 3,500 volunteers to carry out rapid assessments, collect impact data, and deliver First Aid in the districts most affected by the cyclone.
MRC stated that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation through daily updates and is maintaining active coordination with both the SLRCS and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Asia Pacific Office.
The organisation has encouraged contributions in US dollars to help overcome current challenges related to direct fund transfers and to speed up the first tranche of assistance. MRC also plans to work with local banks and businesses to support the foreign exchange of Maldivian rufiyaa donations.
