Muizzu Affirms Commitment to Maldives’ Foreign Policy Amidst ‘India Out’ Movement Questions
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated his commitment to the Maldives’ established foreign policy, stating that he will not endorse any actions that contradict the government’s diplomatic stance.
In an exclusive interview with Adhadhu Media, following a meeting with the Male’ City Council, Muizzu addressed concerns regarding the continuation of the ‘India Out’ movement initiated by the PNC-PPM coalition. He emphasised that his electoral victory reflected public endorsement of the current foreign policy, which will remain unchanged.
Muizzu stated that the country needs peace, development, and security, and he is confident that these objectives will be achieved in the future. He asserted that the people of the Maldives would not allow anyone to destabilise the nation, hinder its development, or compromise its security and independence.
When questioned about the possibility of repealing the ‘India Out’ resolution, Muizzu avoided a direct response and instead reiterated the government’s policy, stating that he had clearly articulated the government’s stance and had answered all the questions comprehensively.
Muizzu’s comments come in the wake of statements by former President Abdulla Yameen, who continues to express scepticism regarding the presence of Indian troops in the Maldives.
After the High Court upheld his 11-year prison sentence, Yameen told the media that the ‘India Out’ campaign would persist. He criticised the current administration for not repealing the resolution supporting the movement.
As the Maldives navigates these complex diplomatic waters, Muizzu’s comments reflect a firm adherence to the nation’s foreign policy while leaving the future of the ‘India Out’ movement under scrutiny.
