President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu commended the international community’s response to the developments at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where a resolution was adopted granting new “rights and privileges” to Palestine.
The resolution also called on the Security Council to reevaluate its stance on Palestine’s request to join the United Nations as its 194th member.
In a statement shared on X platform, President Muizzu described the adoption of the resolution as a significant milestone in the quest for justice for the people of Palestine. He acknowledged the resilience and bravery displayed by Palestinians in their ongoing struggle, drawing inspiration from their determination in the face of adversity.
President Muizzu reiterated the Maldives’ unwavering support for the aspirations of Palestine, affirming the nation’s commitment to the establishment of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the pre-1967 borders.
The resolution, which received approval from the 193-member UN General Assembly, passed with a majority vote of 143-9, with 25 abstentions.
Notably, the resolution now acknowledges Palestine’s eligibility for membership without the previous requirement for it to be deemed a “peace-loving state”. Consequently, the resolution recommends that the Security Council reconsider Palestine’s membership request in a favourable light.
