The President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has called for immediate global action to hold Israel accountable after a deadly airstrike on a Gaza school sheltering displaced Palestinians resulted in over 100 deaths.

The incident occurred early Saturday when Israeli airstrikes targeted the al-Tabin school in the Daraj district of Gaza City. The school, which had been repurposed as a shelter, was struck by three bombs, causing significant casualties and injuring dozens more.

In a strongly worded statement on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday morning, President Muizzu condemned the attack, describing the scenes of devastation, including the deaths of women, children, and the elderly, as “horrifying.” He stressed that the ongoing violence in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of over 39,000 Palestinians since October, constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from international actors, including Qatar and Egypt, who have been central to ongoing negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire. The United States has also joined calls for renewed peace talks, set to resume on August 15.

In a separate statement, the Maldivian government echoed President Muizzu’s condemnation, labelling the strike as a breach of international law and a violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2610.

The government reiterated its call for decisive global action to prevent further attacks on civilians and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination and statehood.

As the conflict continues, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that the death toll in the enclave has surpassed 39,790, with 92,002 people wounded since the conflict’s escalation following Hamas’ cross-border attack on Israel last October.
