President Dr Mohamed Muizzu called on the Commonwealth nations to stand together as a testament to the power of collective action of democracy in challenging times such as this.
In Muizzu’s message to celebrate Commonwealth Day, he nodded towards this year’s theme “Together We Thrive,” noting it resonated deeply with the Maldives’ commitment to unity, resilience and progress.
“For us, unity is not merely a concept, it is the dynamic force which drives collaboration and empowers our communities to address our shared challenges,” Muizzu said in the message posted by the President’s Office.
He said the Maldives acknowledges and appreciates the Commonwealth’s ongoing efforts and advocacy in advancing the interests of small states, including promoting climate resilience, access to finance, women’s empowerment, and youth development. The country reaffirms its commitment to the core principles of democracy, human rights, good governance, and sustainable development, as outlined in the Commonwealth Charter.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Samoa last year highlighted the Maldives’ dedication to unity and cooperation.
“ It is imperative that we work together to translate the outcomes of CHOGM into tangible action. The Maldives stands ready to strengthen its partnership with the Commonwealth and its Member States to ensure a future where every Commonwealth citizen thrives,” Muizzu said.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel noted this year’s theme is a call for action in his statement for Commonwealth Day.
“However, the challenges we face are undeniable. Climate change, financing gaps, the digital divide, and gender inequality continue to disproportionately impact the most vulnerable, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives. “Together We Thrive” is not just a theme, but a call to action. By uniting our efforts, leveraging partnerships, and sharing knowledge, we can build solutions that address these challenges,” Minister Khaleel said.
