Muizzu Holds Talks with Housing and Fisheries Union Representatives
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has engaged in a series of meetings with union representatives to address ongoing concerns in both the housing and fisheries sectors.
On Sunday, Muizzu met with senior members of the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) at the President’s Office. BKMU members expressed their gratitude for the president’s decision not to open Maldivian seas to line fishing, a move they believe will benefit the industry.
They voiced confidence that the government’s manifesto, once fulfilled, would lead to significant progress in the fisheries sector. They also commended the government’s efforts in compiling a fisherman’s registry.
During the meeting, Muizzu reiterated the importance of governing close to the people and promised that comprehensive solutions for the fisheries sector would be realised through the implementation of the manifesto.
He listened to concerns raised by BKMU members, who highlighted issues such as low fisheries income, declining interest in the profession, and operational challenges, including difficulties in weighing fish and obtaining hygiene certification for vessels.
The union also raised concerns regarding the use of location tracking devices for vessels and called on the government to explore options for establishing floor prices for fish sales, setting up special buoys for Yellowfin Tuna, and protecting bait fish areas.
Muizzu also met with members from several housing unions, including the Fahi Union, Giraavaru Male Citizen’s Association, Hulhumale Rayyithunge Committee, and Male Ravvehinge Jamiyyaa.
The discussions focused on the challenges faced by residents in the Male region, with representatives raising issues such as delays in land registration, the need to expedite assurance letters, and a call for increased accountability from authorities.
Muizzu reassured the unions that housing remains a top government priority and that individuals listed in the official gazette as housing recipients would receive their allocations, provided they meet the necessary regulations.
He stressed that ongoing efforts to improve housing opportunities would address the concerns raised and reaffirmed his commitment to easing the difficulties faced by the public.
