Muizzu Meets Rector of University of Tartu in Estonia

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with the Rector of the University of Tartu, Professor Toomas, and other university officials during his visit to the University of Tartu yesterday. 

President Muizzu is currently on his first official international trip of the year, visiting Estonia at the invitation of their President Dr. Alar Kaaris. He has been in Estonia since Monday.

The mayor of Tartu City, Urmas Klaas, accompanied President Muizzu on his visit to the university’s rector. The university officials gave President Muizzu an overview of the institution, highlighting its status as one of the leading universities in Europe with excellence in scientific research. They also discussed the university’s role in adopting environmentally friendly and smart city solutions.

The President expressed his delight at the opportunity to visit the university and expressed his interest in collaborating with Estonia to support Maldivian cities with similar digital innovations and leverage Tartu’s expertise in digitalisation and paperless governance.

During this meeting, President Muizzu discussed Maldivian students studying at the University of Tartu and inquired about scholarship opportunities for them to pursue higher education there. He also highlighted the importance of training professionals in various fields, such as medicine, the digital sector, and climate change and environmental factors. 

In response, University representatives welcomed the idea of hosting Maldivian students and offered information about available scholarships and potential areas of collaboration. They expressed their readiness to negotiate further to establish stronger academic ties.

The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is one of the oldest universities in North Eastern Europe and is ranked among the top 1.2 percent of universities worldwide.

Additionally, President Muizzu attended a luncheon hosted by the Mayor of Tartu city yesterday, where they had friendly discussions about strengthening the bilateral relationship between the Maldivian and Estonian societies. As part of the cultural engagements organised during his official visit to Estonia, he also visited the Estonian National Museum (Eesti Rahva Muuseum) in Tartu and the Estonian biobank.
