Muizzu Nominates Zahid as Chairman, Abdul Rahman as Vice Chairman of ECM

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Mohamed Zahid as the new chairman and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed as vice chairman of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).

The nomination letter sent by President Muizzu on 26 January seeking parliamentary approval for the appointments was read out in Parliament on Monday morning. The nominees have been referred to the Independent Institutions Committee for vetting.

Zahid and Salah were appointed as members of the ECM on 26 January, after receiving parliamentary approval on 16 January, with a unanimous vote of 68.

Zahid had previously served as vice president of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) until his dismissal in 2020. He also held the position of deputy minister at the Ministry of Gender. Salah, on the other hand, had served as secretary-general at the ECM and as permanent secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
