The Committee of the Parliament reached this decision yesterday.
Shaheeb clarified his stance on the matter through an official post on his X account, asserting that the decision to increase salaries was not made at Muizzu’s request and lacked his support.
According to the committee’s resolution, the president’s monthly salary will see a MVR 20,000 increase, bringing it to a total of MVR 120,000. The vice president’s salary will also be raised from the current MVR 75,000 to MVR 93,000.
Initially proposing a salary increase for government ministers to MVR 72,000, with a basic salary of MVR 53,000, the committee opted for a modified approach after thorough discussions. The basic salary was adjusted to MVR 55,000, resulting in a total monthly salary of MVR 74,000 for government ministers.
Muizzu has suggested that the proposed salary increase be allocated to a social fund, such as a children’s shelter.
Muizzu also stated that the government has not sought a salary increase for the President, Vice-President, and ministers.
