During the unveiling of his manifesto, last night, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate of the People’s National Congress (PNC), laid out an economic plan to raise the per capita income to USD 17,000 during his potential administration.

The event also featured a panel discussion with Muizzu and economic experts.

Muizzu emphasised the pressing need for a government capable of rejuvenating the nation’s economy. He highlighted his administration’s core focus on economic stabilisation and implementing transformative changes to foster economic growth.

Among his key promises was a commitment to reducing the state budget deficit from its current 15% to single-digit figures. Muizzu also vowed to maintain the stability of the Maldivian Rufiyaa against the US dollar and bolster the state’s reserve.

Moreover, Muizzu pledged to permit the deposit of US dollars into the sovereign development fund, enabling monthly contributions.

He articulated his intention to work towards restoring the country’s credit rating to levels last seen in 2016, aiming to rebuild investor trust in the Maldivian economy. His plans included the creation of special economic zones and the establishment of a dedicated bank for resort development.

Additionally, he proposed the creation of international payment gateways to facilitate global transactions and increase opportunities for the youth.

Muizzu also vowed to boost fish exports and allocate more islands for agricultural purposes. The development of fisheries and agriculture featured in his manifesto as top priorities.
