President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said providing housing is one of the ways in which the youth can be empowered, adding that the administration is working to establish housing in “tourism hubs” so resort workers do not feel compelled to live near Malé.

Speaking at the Youth Coffee with the President session, held to conclude the two-day National Youth Conference yesterday evening, President Muizzu referred to areas with numerous resorts as tourism hubs and outlined initiatives taken to empower young people.

“[We] are planning housing projects near a resort or in a major tourist area. The solution is to provide young people with the opportunity to find housing closer to their families. Not everyone needs to move to a new housing development,” he said.

The President noted that housing remains the biggest barrier to youth empowerment. He added that over 800 housing units have recently been contracted, with a portion allocated for youth and individuals employed in tourism. “In the most recent scheme, we set some aside for people starting and beginning families as well,” he said.

Other groups with dedicated allocations in the recently announced land and social housing projects – Residential Land for Malé Residents Policy and Flat Allocation Policy for Malé Residents – include individuals over 18 without housing, single parents, people with disabilities, those who have lost their mothers, state institution staff, and tourism sector workers. These measures reaffirm commitments made during his presidential campaign, although the specific allocations for each group have not been disclosed.
