In his speech, Muizzu also alleged the current governments attempt to demolish the Hiyaa flats, citing that despite their efforts, the buildings remained intact. Consequently, a decision was made to leave the premises in its current state for three years and provide them to the residents.
Muizzu assured the public that the average expenses incurred by residents for finishing the Hiyaa flats would be reimbursed, recognising the financial burdens borne by many.
Furthermore, Muizzu announced the waiver of fines related to the flats, attributing this decision to the economic challenges faced by the residents due to rising commodity prices. He emphasised the PPM’s commitment to establishing a compassionate government, which has driven these measures since taking office.
The government set a three-month grace period for completing the finishing work on the second phase of Hulhumale’s flats, and then extended by another three months after popular concern.
Residents have the option to pay for the Hiyaa flats over a 25-year period, with monthly installments of MVR 7,500, in addition to a flat management fee of MVR 1,000 per month.
Notably, in May of this year, the monthly rent was reduced to MVR 6,300 from 7,000, and Urbanco has extended the payment period for the flats.
