In an interview with Al Jazeera, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced his commitment to ending political appointments within the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Muizzu expressed his reservations about the current state of the judicial system’s independence in the Maldives, stating that this is vital in order to achieve a more impartial judiciary.

Muizzu emphasised his determination to institute these changes from the very beginning of his reign as president.

One of Muizzu’s primary concerns is the presence of political appointees in the JSC, which, in his view, hinders the establishment of an independent and fair judiciary.

He proposed the transfer of the judiciary’s administration under the purview of the JSC, and argued that retired judges are best suited for this role.

The current 10-member JSC comprises individuals appointed by various authorities, including the President, the Speaker of Parliament, Parliament itself, the Attorney General, members of the courts, and the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission.
