Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate from the People’s National Congress (PNC), has formally submitted his candidacy form to the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM).
Muizzu was joined by PNC President and leader of the PPM/PNC coalition, Abdul Raheem Abdullah. Also present were Muizzu’s running mate, MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef, and Mohamed Tholal, the Secretary General of the PPM.
Muizzu’s candidacy was given the green light by the PNC’s consultative council in the preceding week, effectively positioning him as the chosen representative to succeed former President Abdullah Yameen. However, Yameen has publicly expressed his opposition to this decision.
In a notable development, the Supreme Court recently ruled that Abdullah Yameen’s candidacy form had not been accepted in accordance with proper procedures by the ECM. Yameen, responding to the verdict, asserted that his rights had been infringed upon.
Despite these circumstances, the joint Senate of the PPM and PNC opted against boycotting the upcoming election.
