Authorities have intercepted MVR 47.5 million worth of narcotics over the past 1.5 months, revealed Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan while speaking at a ceremony in Feydhoo last night.
Speaking as part of the delegation accompanying the president’s ongoing tour of four southern atolls, Minister Ihusan emphasized the critical importance of combating drug-related crimes for national security.
“Over the last one-and-a-half months or so, we have prevented MVR 47.5 million in drugs from hitting the streets of Maldives. This is due to the priority the president gives to (curbing the drug trade),” Minister Ihusan remarked during the gathering.
Furthermore, Minister Ihusan highlighted the administration’s efforts in rehabilitation, noting that upon taking office, approximately 800 individuals were earmarked for rehab programs. Presently, 300 individuals have commenced rehabilitation, with plans for the remaining individuals to join the program imminently.
In a move towards addressing drug addiction, President Muizzu has directed Minister Ihusan to pursue a comprehensive strategy aimed at eliminating drug dependency entirely within the next five years.
