The Malé City Council has revealed that MVR 60 million is spent annually on disposing of waste collected from the streets of the capital.

According to the council, a significant portion of this waste stems from public littering. The authority stated that eliminating such behaviour would allow funds to be redirected towards the upkeep of public facilities, including parks and mosques.

Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has called for greater public cooperation with city council staff working to keep the capital clean. He noted that 30 tonnes of waste are removed from the streets of Malé each day. Common practices contributing to the issue include discarding rubbish on electricity distribution boxes and on concrete barriers surrounding plants.

In response, the mayor has urged residents to refrain from littering and to make use of the public dustbins available across the city.

To curb littering, the city council has implemented fines of MVR 500 for those found disposing of waste improperly. Additionally, the identities of offenders are being publicised on social media. The council also retains the authority to increase penalties for repeat violations.
