Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed engaged in discussions with President Ibrahim Solih today concerning the potential support for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the upcoming second round of the presidential election, scheduled September 30, 2023.
This development comes despite The Democrats party’s decision to remain neutral and refrain from endorsing any particular candidate.
The meeting between President Nasheed and President Solih took place at the Presidential Office this morning, marking a significant and somewhat unexpected interaction between the two leaders.
It’s worth noting that President Nasheed and President Solih shared a close friendship prior to the latter’s assumption of power. However, their political affiliation became frayed, and tensions came to a head when Nasheed resigned from the MDP presidential primary in January, subsequently establishing a new political party named The Democrats.
In the initial round of the presidential election, held on the 9th of this month, The Democrats’ candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, secured the third-highest number of votes. However, in a surprising move, The Democrats opted not to take sides in the upcoming second round of the election, despite attempts by the MDP to garner their support.
