Nasheed Condemns Tree Felling in Villimale, Calls for Legal Action
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has criticised the removal of a significant number of trees in Villimale and called for criminal charges to be brought against Male City Council.
A video circulated on social media on Wednesday showed trees being felled on both sides of a road in Villimale, drawing public criticism.

In a post on X, Nasheed stated that it is unlawful to remove trees without proper authorisation. He asserted that Male City Council does not have the right to cut down trees growing on the streets at its discretion and expressed the view that the council should face legal action.
Male City Council has not yet issued a statement explaining the reason for the tree removal.
Nasheed also raised concerns about the removal of old trees on Ameenee Magu during the previous government’s road development project. He had filed a case in the Civil Court against the Ministry of Planning and the Road Development Corporation (RDC) in an effort to prevent the removal, but the court did not grant an order.
