Speaker of the People’s Majlis of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, and The Democrats party have decided to temporarily halt their efforts to change the country’s system of governance, opting to give President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu an opportunity to lead.

Last month, the Parliament members belonging to The Democrats, passed a resolution advocating for a referendum to determine a potential system change before October 30.

In a statement made at the commencement of today’s parliamentary session, Nasheed, disclosed that the party had chosen to suspend its campaign for a referendum.

Nasheed further revealed that he had discussed this decision with Muizzu during the latter’s visit to the Parliament yesterday.

Muizzu’s response was deemed satisfactory, as stated by Nasheed. Consequently, the presidential term should commence, providing Muizzu with a favourable opportunity to govern. The matter of the system to be discussed on the parliament’s agenda today will not proceed.

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) had announced that there would be no scheduled voting for the remainder of this month. This information has also been conveyed to the Parliament.
