Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over excessive electricity usage at Velana International Airport (VIA), highlighting that the airport’s internal temperature is set to an unnecessarily low level.

In a post shared on X on Sunday, Nasheed noted that the temperature inside the airport is currently maintained at 15 degrees Celsius, which he described as wasteful. He suggested that a more suitable range would be between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius to ensure comfort while conserving energy.

Several users who responded to his post echoed similar sentiments, noting that maintaining such a low temperature would lead to higher electricity consumption and operational costs.

The new terminal at Velana International Airport, equipped with modern facilities and designed to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually, was inaugurated on 26 July this year to mark the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day anniversary.
