Nasheed Raises Concerns Over Inefficacy of Male’ City’s Drainage Systems

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed apprehensions regarding the effectiveness of the existing stormwater drainage systems in Male’ City, asserting that they have proven inadequate and are likely to face ongoing challenges.

Taking to X platform, Nasheed conveyed his worries concerning the floods that transpired due to intense rainfall in Male’ and other islands. Proposing the necessity for revamped drainage system designs to address the issues in Male’, he advocated for innovative solutions such as the reintroduction of mangroves and bathing tanks in the city as effective measures against flooding.

In response to the flooding predicament, the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has declared its collaboration with relevant government agencies to address the issue in the capital city. Male’ experienced a rainfall of 118.2mm, while Hulhule’ witnessed a historic high of 179.7mm, marking the highest rainfall in the last 50 years. 

The substantial rains and ensuing floods have resulted in damage to residences in Male’ and several other islands across the nation.
