Former President Mohamed Nasheed said last night that he plans to secure the signatures of a two-thirds majority of MPs to submit a no-confidence motion against President Mohamed Muizzu to the People’s Majlis.
Speaking at a campaign rally for former Addu Mayor Abdulla Sodiq, also known as Sobe, who is contesting the North Hithadhoo constituency by-election in Addu City, Nasheed said the opposition’s objective was to change the current administration.
“We must change this administration before the end of this year,” Nasheed said. He added that he believes the opposition can secure the two-thirds parliamentary majority required to pass a no-confidence motion, including support from members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
Nasheed also claimed that former President Abdulla Yameen was prepared to support the effort.
Referring to the national referendum held on 4 April, Nasheed said the results demonstrated that President Muizzu’s administration had lost public confidence.
The comments come ahead of the North Hithadhoo by-election, which was triggered after former MP Mohamed Sinan lost his parliamentary seat following a Supreme Court ruling earlier this month.
The court ruled that Sinan had forfeited his seat after failing to comply with an October 2024 court order requiring him to repay MVR 2.5 million related to a loan obtained from the Islamic Bank jointly with another individual.
Sinan had initially won the PNC primary for the by-election but later announced he would relinquish the ticket in favour of Ahmed Saeed, following consultations with constituents.
According to Sinan, discussions held after the primary indicated that a new candidate would have a stronger chance of securing victory for the party in the constituency.
The by-election for the parliamentary seat is scheduled for 6 June.
