Former President Mohamed Nasheed has decided to dissolve The Democrats, the political party formed under his leadership following a split from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The decision was made during a sitting of the party’s National Assembly on Tuesday, where a resolution to disband the party was passed by a majority vote. The resolution stated that restoring public confidence in the multi-party political system required a strong and united opposition. It further highlighted the importance of broader cooperation to achieve this objective and concluded that joining the MDP was the most effective course of action.
The move follows a series of high-profile resignations from The Democrats in recent months, including several senior figures who had played key roles in the party’s formation and leadership.
The Democrats was established in the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election, following internal disagreements within the MDP after Nasheed’s loss in the party’s presidential primary. According to data from the Election Commission of the Maldives, the party had 3,667 registered members at the time of dissolution.
