A no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is set to take place on the upcoming Sunday, the 29th of this month.

The motion, which was signed by 49 members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was accepted and formal notices have been sent to Nasheed and the concerned MPs by the Secretary General of the Parliament, Fathimath Niusha.

The General Committee has allocated 30 minutes for Nasheed to respond to the no-confidence motion. However, as the MDP prepares to move forward with the motion, Nasheed has expressed reservations about its acceptance during this session.

He noted that only one no-confidence motion can be entertained per session, and the MDP had previously filed and withdrawn a similar motion in the last session.

In response to Nasheed’s assertion, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Mohamed Aslam emphasised that the Secretary-General would ultimately decide whether the motion could proceed. Aslam also alleged that Speaker Nasheed had sent threatening messages to certain MPs, discouraging them from raising the issue in parliament.

It’s worth noting that in the previous session, a no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed and Vice President Eva Abdullah was presented simultaneously, which resulted in the parliament having to adjourn without completing several pending tasks.

With 56 MDP members currently serving in parliament, a no-confidence motion against the Speaker of Parliament requires 43 votes to pass.
