The Ministry of Social and Family Development launched the National Development Screening Tool, an initiative aimed at strengthening the early detection and systematic treatment of children experiencing developmental delays.

At the launch yesterday, the Ministry highlighted that the new measure, introduced as the Developmental Milestone Tracking Form, represents a significant step in supporting timely treatment for children with developmental challenges. The initiative is expected to improve long-term outcomes and contribute to building a more inclusive society.

The Ministry noted the Maldives’ earlier progress in child health, including the substantial reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates, and stated that similar systemic improvements in disability identification would enable affected children to integrate more fully into society. The tracking form has been developed to support both parents and educators by providing a structured referral system that makes it easier to identify developmental differences at home and in the classroom.

The vision behind the initiative emphasises the creation of national systems that effectively respond to the needs of every child from an early age. The Ministry stated that the tool is designed to deliver lasting change in the country’s approach to childhood development.

In a parallel announcement, the Ministry of Health also launched the Developmental Milestone Tracking Form to assist in identifying growth challenges and developmental delays in children and to facilitate early intervention. The Ministry explained that the current rate of monitoring children’s development beyond the age of two remains low and underscored the importance of continued tracking to maintain the nation’s health achievements.

According to the Ministry of Health, the country’s Growth Monitoring Programme has been digitalised, enabling parents to track their children’s development up to the age of five using mobile devices. Health service providers across the Maldives have received training to use the new form, which they will maintain as part of routine services.

From 2027 onwards, the Developmental Milestone Tracking Form will be mandatory for all children starting school. The requirement aims to support professionals in delivering more comprehensive care and to assist parents in identifying development challenges at an early stage.
