The national mental health helpline established by the Ministry of Health has received more than 13,000 calls since its launch two years ago.
Officially introduced on 21 February 2024, the helpline is accessible by dialling 1677 and was created to provide psychosocial support and psychological first aid to individuals facing mental health challenges.
Deputy Health Minister Aminath Ismail, speaking on the ‘Raajje Miadhu’ programme broadcast by Public Service Media, said the service was launched during a period of acute national need. She noted that the high number of calls reflects the importance of the service in providing immediate assistance. The helpline serves a wide demographic, including young people.
Officials said work is underway to further improve the quality of mental health care. Plans are being developed to establish an emergency response system capable of providing immediate assistance to individuals experiencing mental health crises. A multi-sectoral mental health referral pathway has also been designed, and authorities are working towards full implementation of the system within the year.
The Ministry of Health reiterated that the helpline operates continuously, providing 24-hour support. In addition to psychological first aid, the service offers problem-solving assistance, shares essential information, and connects callers to relevant support services through a structured referral network. The objective of the service is to ensure that people of all ages experiencing psychological distress have uninterrupted access to professional help.
