The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has announced the completion of the National Register of Fishermen, marking a significant step in formalising and empowering the country’s fishing community.
The registry, a key presidential initiative, is designed to provide fishermen with official state recognition as professionals, enabling broader access to financial services and government support. The programme was launched on 16 February last year as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to acknowledge the economic contributions of fishermen and improve conditions within the sector. The Ministry will also oversee data relating to reef fishing, recreational fishing, and sports fishing as part of the initiative.
According to the Minister, the compilation of the register has now been completed, although the process remains open for new entrants to the profession and those who were unable to register earlier.
A central goal of the programme is to integrate fishermen into the formal financial system. With state-recognised professional status, fishermen will become eligible for a range of loan schemes offered by local banks, government housing projects, and other credit facilities that have typically been more accessible to salaried workers in other industries.
The Minister highlighted the broader social benefits, noting that fishing families often face substantial financial pressures. He said the new system will ease access to essential services such as housing loans, education financing, and other support mechanisms that directly affect their livelihoods.
