National Research Grant Fund Takes Shape Under Higher Education Minister’s Leadership

In an interview with ‘Dhauru’, Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Maryam Mariya confirmed the progress in establishing a national research grant fund, aligning with President Dr Mohammed Muizzu’s commitment to bolster research across diverse fields.
Minister Dr Mariya, who assumed office last week, provided insights into the ongoing efforts within the ministry during the interview. She revealed that the development of the research fund is advancing rapidly, with its inclusion as a key commitment in Week 14.
During the interview, Minister Dr Mariya shed light on the initiatives undertaken by the team tasked with setting up the fund. Key points highlighted include the identification of areas with the most significant research needs, leveraging previous needs assessments to pinpoint critical sectors.
“We are strategically evaluating which areas hold the utmost importance for our nation, focusing on research that will benefit the country and empower the youth and citizens,” the Minister stated.
Emphasising the untapped potential within the Maldives, Minister Dr Mariya acknowledged the presence of capable individuals educated in various fields. Despite this, she noted the absence of national attention towards research and scientific endeavors.
Minister Dr Mariya underscored the significance of scientifically studying the challenges faced by the Maldives. She called for the identification of appropriate solutions through rigorous research, emphasising the need for a dedicated focus on addressing the nation’s issues.
