The vacancy arose following the retirement of former police commissioner Mohamed Hameed on November 15. The subsequent appointment of acting commissioner Abdul Mannan Yoosuf was short-lived, as Mannan retired just over a week later. In his place, assistant commissioner Farhad Fikry assumed the responsibilities.

The Police Act outlines a specific process for the appointment of a police commissioner. The law mandates a 90-day application period, during which officials ranked assistant commissioner or higher are eligible to apply. The vetting of candidates will be conducted by the Police Board, and the final appointment will be made by the president, guided by the recommendations of the cabinet minister overseeing the matter.
