The National Drug Agency (NDA) has called on the public to report any individuals found intoxicated on the streets.
In a statement released yesterday, the agency said it is conducting a special operation in collaboration with the police. The NDA noted a rise in the use of party drugs and other substances in the Maldives, contributing to increasing health issues among users. Many individuals currently in rehabilitation programmes told the agency they had initially used drugs recreationally from time to time but eventually experienced significant long-term impacts on their physical and mental health.
The NDA emphasised that alcohol consumption is not only a criminal offence but also poses serious health risks and can be life-threatening. The agency further warned that the use of party drugs and other substances could facilitate the spread of deadly diseases.
The agency urged the public to report instances of partying or intoxication by calling the national emergency number 911 or the NDA’s hotline 1410.
An outreach programme conducted by the NDA in Malé between 25 February and 25 March found that a significant number of young people, including minors, are involved in drug use and related criminal activities. The agency plans to carry out further outreach initiatives to gain a deeper understanding of the issue.
