The National Drug Agency (NDA) convened its first meeting with newly appointed board members to strategise on tackling drug abuse and enhancing rehabilitation initiatives across the nation.

Chaired by Uza Lubna Zahir, the board, comprising 10 members representing various state institutions, gathered to outline inter-agency responsibilities. The session commenced with the appointment of Uz Ismail Zahir, Deputy Minister of Health, as vice chairperson and a comprehensive management audit to evaluate NDA’s performance.

In an interview with the government news portal Sarukaaru, Chairperson Lubna stated that each board member has been allocated specific roles aimed at addressing the country’s drug challenges. The board resolved to convene weekly and revise its bylaws unanimously.

“Today, we deliberated on NDA’s collaboration with law enforcement under the Drug Act and efforts in rehabilitation,” Lubna affirmed. “Insights were shared by the Ministries of Health, Youth, and Education. Customs has been tasked to take decisive measures against drug supply.”

The board additionally endorsed the introduction of five new treatment methods for drug rehabilitation.

However, Ahmed Abdul Sattart, representing the civil society organisation Journey, criticised NDA’s operational record, asserting that the agency has more unfulfilled commitments than achievements.
