The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that a staff member of the National Drug Agency has been remanded in custody for 15 days following his arrest on suspicion of supplying drugs to patients undergoing rehabilitation.
The individual has been identified as Mohamed Faseeh, 51, from Florida, S. Feydhoo, who works as a peer mentor at the Agency. He was arrested last Thursday on suspicion of providing drugs to patients and maintaining inappropriate associations with individuals receiving treatment through the Agency.
According to the Police, the case was submitted by the National Drug Agency on 4 November, after which Faseeh was taken into custody under a court order. He was presented before the court for a remand hearing on Friday, where he was ordered to remain in custody for 15 days.
The Police stated that the case remains under active investigation.
Drug abuse continues to be one of the most pressing social challenges in the Maldives, and there have previously been incidents of drug use within rehabilitation centres. The National Drug Agency has said it routinely conducts inspections to ensure treatment facilities remain secure and free from prohibited substances.
