The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has distributed sandbags at three locations across Malé to help minimise damage from potential flooding, following forecasts of severe weather in the coming days.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has predicted adverse weather conditions, prompting a coordinated response from the police, MNDF, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to mitigate the risks posed by heavy rainfall.

Chief of Defence Force Ibrahim Hilmy announced at a press conference held at Iskandharu Koshi that sandbags are now available at three designated sites in Malé: Kudakudhinge Bageecha (Children’s Park), the Salman Mosque area, and Rasfannu.
Police Commissioner Ali Shujau confirmed that more than 56 households have already collected sandbags. NDMA CEO Hisan Hassan stated that additional provisions would be made available to households upon request. He added that sandbags would be placed at key locations throughout the day to strengthen flood defences.
The NDMA has urged the public to contact their emergency hotline, 115, for assistance during any emergencies.
Earlier this month, heavy rainfall led to significant flooding across Malé and several other islands, with Malé City experiencing the most severe impact.
