The NDMA highlighted that heavy rainfall over Malé and surrounding atolls could lead to flooding and advised residents to take measures to reduce potential damage from strong winds and rising waters.
The current period of unsettled weather coincides with the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as the Iruvai Monsoon. The Maldives experiences two distinct monsoon seasons: the Southwest or Hulhangu Monsoon, which runs from May to November, and the Northeast or Iruvai Monsoon, which typically lasts from January to March.
The Iruvai Monsoon generally begins in the northern atolls in early December and spreads across the country by January.
This year, the Iruvai Monsoon has brought early rainfall to the central regions, prompting warnings from the NDMA and meteorological authorities.
