NDMA Provides Emergency Assistance, Shelter to 109 People After Galolhu House Fire

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided temporary shelter, meals and other humanitarian assistance to 109 people affected by the fire at G. Funfalhu House in Malé, spending MVR 95,000 on relief efforts so far.
According to the NDMA, temporary accommodation and catering have been arranged for two days for 93 residents living in 22 apartments in the building. An additional 16 people from the three apartments on the fifth floor where the fire broke out have been provided with shelter and meals for five days.
The NDMA said damage assessments are currently underway to determine the extent of losses caused by the incident.

The fire broke out on the night of 5 July. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said firefighters from the Malé Fire Station responded after receiving the report at approximately 10:49pm and brought the blaze under control by around 11:48pm.
According to the MNDF, the fire originated on the fourth floor of the building. Eleven people were taken to the hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire.
