In response to the flooding, the NDMA, in collaboration with the Local Government Ministry, has arranged for the distribution of sandbags at the former Housing Ministry site. A total of 13 pumps have been installed in six locations across Male to assist with draining floodwaters. These locations include IGMH, Maafannu ferry terminal, West Park, Salman Mosque, Boduvalhu, and Children’s Park.
As part of the ongoing response, 976 sandbags have been distributed, and assistance has been provided to 131 affected households. Flooding has also been reported on several islands, including K. Thulusdhoo, where sewage leakage has been observed, and K. Hinmafushi, K. Huraa, and K. Guraidhoo. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to affected communities.
In B. Kudarikilu, heavy rainfall has caused flooding in the school and several homes on the island. The flooding began late on Saturday night and continued until Sunday morning. Although the floodwaters have since been drained, significant damage to homes and infrastructure remains.
Nine houses were affected, and fishing equipment was damaged. The school, located in a low-lying area, was also impacted, with floodwater entering the building and damaging computer systems, TVs, documents, equipment, and chairs. Local authorities, including the public, police, and employees of Fenaka and other institutions, have been working together to manage the situation.
The island council of Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll confirmed on Sunday that over half of the island’s houses reported damage to their furniture as a result of recent rainfall. The NDMA announced that Thulusdhoo, along with Himmafushi, Huraa, and Guraidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, were among the affected islands.
Many residents of Thulusdhoo reported flood damage to interiors, including furniture and appliances. The island council’s president, Aslam Moosa, stated that the majority of the island was submerged the previous night, with water levels receding by around 03:30 hrs on Sunday morning. He noted that the damage would take more than two months to recover from, with over 50% of the homes suffering damage to furniture.
The public, alongside the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officers and local council authorities, has been involved in efforts to drain the water, including digging moats to connect to the sea to aid in drainage. The NDMA confirmed it is continuing to work with the councils of the affected islands to manage the situation.
