According to the minister, the construction of the new Shaheed Ali School in Hulhumale’ Phase II is expected to significantly ease the situation. The school is scheduled to open for the new academic year on 27 January.

Dr Shafeeu stated that a contractor has already been appointed to add 18 additional classrooms to existing schools in Hulhumale’ Phase II. He also confirmed that work on another new school in the area will commence later this year.

Alongside the shortage of classroom space, the Maldives’ education sector continues to face a shortage of qualified teachers, adding further challenges to the system’s capacity to meet growing demand.
