Maldives Correctional Services has introduced a new body scanning machine at Maafushi Prison as part of efforts to strengthen security measures and prevent contraband from entering the facility.

The state-of-the-art scanner was inaugurated by the Homeland Minister Ali Ihusaan. The machine, being first of its kind to be implemented at the prison, was provided by the government through the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.

The upgrade is intended to enhance screening procedures amid concerns about contraband smuggling into correctional facilities. Items such as mobile phones and other prohibited materials have previously been seized during security checks, and the issue of smuggled contraband remains a persistent challenge in prisons.

The Maldives Correctional Service said a body scanning machine had previously been installed at the facility, but the newly introduced system is more advanced and modern.

The standard security process involves individuals first passing through a metal detector. If required, officers then conduct a physical pat-down search following the scan.
