The newly installed lifts at Hiyaa Tower 2 in Hulhumalé Phase II were brought into service, following the completion of testing.

According to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), testing of new lifts at Hiyaa Towers 1, 2, and 3 commenced on 7 April. The new lifts at Tower 2 are the first to become operational as part of this effort.

HDC stated that the installation of new lifts across the remaining Hiyaa towers is ongoing, with Tower 1 expected to be the next to receive operational lifts. The corporation noted that the installation process is progressing at different stages across the various towers.

Each of the new lifts being installed has a capacity of 21 people and is designed to accommodate stretchers, addressing concerns over accessibility and emergency response within the towers.

The installation of additional lifts at the Hiyaa towers is part of an electoral pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The project was awarded in February to China’s Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group, which has been contracted to install a total of 32 lifts across 16 towers.

Former HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed previously stated that the lifts were procured at a cost of USD 18 million.
