The Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Aslam, has announced that the newly elected members of parliament will take their oath of office on May 28th, following the elections held on Sunday.

The Progressive National Congress (PNC), the main ruling party, has secured a supermajority in the incoming 20th parliamentary assembly, comprising 93 lawmakers.

In the first parliamentary session since the elections, held this morning, Speaker Aslam extended congratulations to all newly elected members. He confirmed that their official swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 28th.

Preparations for the inauguration ceremony are currently underway.

However, it is noteworthy that the main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which held the majority in the outgoing 19th parliamentary assembly, has only secured 10 seats in Sunday’s election.

Speaker Aslam, who has served four consecutive terms in parliament, notably failed to defend his seat in this election.

A significant portion of members from the outgoing parliamentary assembly did not contest in Sunday’s election. Only 11 members from the 19th parliamentary assembly sought re-election.

The term of the outgoing parliamentary assembly is set to expire on May 15th, with the new assembly scheduled to be sworn in on May 28th. Unless any alternative decision is made, the final sitting of the outgoing assembly will take place on May 13th.
