Previously, public demonstrations were allowed without written authorisation only in the Henveiru Carnival area. Under the latest announcement, made in accordance with Article 24 of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, three more areas have been added: the Rasfannu area, the Industrial Zone, and the Usfasgandu area.
This decision comes against the backdrop of ongoing protests in Malé following the 18 April incident involving 21-year-old women, who was found lying on the rooftop of a house after reportedly falling from a building.
Protesters have been gathering near the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building on Majeedhee Magu, with police setting up barricades in anticipation of nightly demonstrations. The protests have now continued for over ten days, during which police have used pepper spray and force to disperse crowds and have arrested two individuals.
