In a recent development, the 794th General Assembly of the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) convened on July 18 and decided to pass a no-confidence motion against President Fuad Thaufeeq.

The motion was prompted by concerns regarding the manner in which he has been conducting his responsibilities.
Nevertheless, it is essential to note that this motion was not intended to result in the removal of Fuad Thaufeeq from his current position as Commission Chairman.
The decision not to expel President Fuad Thaufeeq from the Commission Chairman role was based on the legal constraints faced by the members of the ECM.
The authority to remove the Commission Chairman lies solely with the Parliament, and the members of the ECM do not possess the legal empowerment to enact such a removal.
