A no-confidence motion targeting Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah has been scheduled for discussion during Sunday’s parliamentary session.
The motion, backed by 49 members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and an independent member, was formally delivered to Eva on the 20th of this month.
In adherence to parliamentary protocols, the matter is slated for deliberation during the initial session held 14 days subsequent to the submission of the notice.
Members of the MDP cite concerns over Eva’s actions, alleging that despite her familial ties to former President Mohamed Nasheed, she has consistently prioritised personal interests over her official responsibilities.
Originally elected to parliament as an MDP representative, Eva’s departure from the party is viewed as a violation of the commitment candidates make when aligning themselves with the MDP.
In light of these concerns, the MDP members have collectively expressed a loss of confidence in Eva, as outlined in the resolution.
The House General Committee has allotted 30 minutes on Sunday’s agenda for Eva to provide a response to the allegations. The proceedings are expected to shed light on the intricacies of the situation and the potential implications for the Deputy Speaker’s position within the parliament.
