The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has unveiled plans to reduce the prices of 250 essential medicines covered by the Aasandha public health insurance scheme, aiming to control medicine costs and reform the scheme.

In a statement issued yesterday, the NSPA outlined that the price reductions will occur in phases. Starting November 1, the prices of 87 medicines will be lowered, followed by a reduction for an additional 126 medicines on November 24.

Heena Waleed, the managing director of NSPA, stated that these price adjustments are projected to save the Aasandha scheme over MVR 220 million annually. She noted that previous administrations had intended to implement such changes but had not succeeded.

Heena confirmed that the medicines will remain available to the public free of charge at pharmacies participating in the Aasandha scheme.

The NSPA also indicated that updated price lists will be available on the Aasandha website on the respective dates of the price changes. The agency has encouraged the public to report any discrepancies in medicine prices through the ‘Shikavathi’ chatline at 7951400.
